I pinned this kaleidoscope necklace from Etsy by HOMAKO a while back—I love DIY felt projects for the low cost of materials and variety of colors available at any craft store. Since I’m slow at making crafts for myself, I decided this would be a great project to make for a friend’s birthday. Big plus: I already had all the materials on hand. 🙂

Materials/Tools:

• 3-5 colors of felt (about a 2 inch square of each color is all you need)
• Sticky stiff felt (about 3.5 x 2.5 inch)
• Necklace chain (I used a 14 inch chain to make a 16 inch necklace)
• Ruler
• Diamond template from cardstock
• Sharp fabric scissors
• Regular scissors
• Needle and thread
• Jewelry wire, a clasp, flatnose and roundnose pliers, and a wire cutter if you’re finishing off the ends of the necklace yourself

Using cardstock, cut out a diamond template. (I used a diamond template with 5/16 inch sides and 5/16 inch width). Use the diamond template and fabric scissors to cut out 18 diamond shapes from the felt. (I cut out 6 diamonds from each color of felt so I could test out different color combinations). Layout the design you would like. Unpeel the back of the sticky stiff felt. Carefully place the design on the sticky side of the stiff felt. Cut out the design using regular scissors. Using a needle and thread, sew the necklace chain to the back of the felt. Optional: add a drop of clear fabric glue to the sewn areas to secure it further. Either use wire wrapping or jumprings with a clasp to attach the ends of the chain. And woohoo, you’re done!

The hardest part was figuring out the sizing of the diamond template to make 6 diamonds fit into a kaleidoscope shape. I know you could probably do this quickly with some math, but I went with the trial-and-error method instead. 🙂  The fun part was definitely picking out the colors and then I just went with the same layout as the HOMAKO version to make things easy. This is probably an hour or less project, so I hope you try it out!
