A couple weekends ago, I flew out to Vegas for a friend’s Star Trek themed bachelorette party. The theme was a surprise for the bride—who thoroughly enjoyed it, even though she’s more a Next Generation Trekkie than The Original Series (TOS) Trekkie. The girls dressed up in blue and black dresses, wore Spock ears, and the TOS insignia. Surprisingly, few people could figure out our Vulcan costumes and some even thought our pointy ears were real—maybe we needed the eyebrows and bangs.
Here are the insignia that I made using my Cricut, silver/glittery scrapbook paper, black paper, and pins. The glue didn’t hold well and we had to improvise with some tape at the corners.
I also made fondant Star Trek insignia toppers for the cupcakes I brought. (Although Lick It, Bite It, or Both has my favorite cupcakes in Austin, it would have been a lot easier to buy them from the bakery that was literally next to the hotel elevator entrance instead of flying them halfway across the country. Silly me.)
Ingredients/Materials:
- Satin Ice fondant
- Fondant rolling pin
- Powdered sugar
- Cricut insignia cutout template
- Sharp knife
- Silver food color spray
First, roll out the fondant to 3/8 inch thickness on a powder sugared surface. Place the insignia template over the fondant and cut out the shapes using a sharp knife. Spray the insignia with the silver food color spray or add sprinkles/disco dust. Let the shapes dry out for 15-30 minutes before placing them on cupcakes. If using at a later time, store the cutout shapes in an airtight container with plastic wrap between layers. (It was my first time working with fondant and I found out that it dries/hardens quickly. But once you place it in an airtight container for a while, it goes back to being soft/malleable again. So strange.)
Since we were full from our late Wynn buffet lunch, we just had the cupcakes, cake balls from SugaPlump Pastries, and Kim’s macarons (lady half of the Ravenous Couple) before we headed out for the night. As for the rest of the festivities, you know the old Vegas saying… 😉
Oh, how fun!
I love me a group of ladies who are dedicated to a theme! Rock on!
total babez!
These are great! Can I ask what Cricut cartridge you used to make the Star Trek insignia? I’ve been looking for awhile, but with no luck. Would really appreciate any tips!
Hi Gwen! I used the Sure Cuts a Lot Software and found a jpeg online to cut out the insignia.
Great idea! Looks like so much fun!
